INTRODUCTION: RECENTLY, MOST ATHLETES CONTINUE TRAINING UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE THE COMPETITION AND THINK THAT CUTTING TRAINING WILL IMPAIR EXERCISE PERFORMANCE. IN THESE CONDITIONS, ATHLETES WILL NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECREATE ENERGY RESERVES AND IMPROVE THEIR PHYSICAL CONDITIONS. THE TAPER IS A REDUCTION IN THE TRAINING LOAD OF ATHLETES IN THE FINAL DAYS BEFORE IMPORTANT COMPETITION, WITH THE AIM OF OPTIMIZING PERFORMANCE. THIS REDUCTION OF THE TRAINING LOAD CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH THE ALTERATION OF SEVERAL COMPONENTS, INCLUDING THE TRAINING VOLUME, INTENSITY, AND FREQUENCY, AS WELL AS THE PATTERN OF THE TAPER (I.E., PROGRESSIVE OR STEP TAPER) AND ITS DURATION [1]. TAPER PERIOD IMPROVES PERFORMANCE BY MINIMIZING THE ACCUMULATED FATIGUE WITHOUT SACRIFICING ADAPTATION.METHODOLOGY: IN THIS STUDY, 18 YOUNG FREESTYLE WRESTLERS WERE SELECTED, WITH PREVIOUS TRAINING EXPERIENCE FOR OVER 5 YEARS, WITH AN AVERAGE AGE OF 1.65 ± 18 YEARS AND THE AVERAGE WEIGHT OF 2.5 ± 78.5 KG WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINING REGULARLY IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS.THE SUBJECTS WERE DIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS A AND B. AFTER THE TEST, GROUP A ENTERED A ONE WEEK TAPER PERIOD, MEANING THAT THEIR CONSTANT TRAINING INTENSITY AND DURATION OF EXERCISE WAS CUT IN HALF WHILE GROUP B CONTINUED THEIR TRAINING WITHOUT A CHANGE IN ITS ELEMENTS. FOR MEASURING UPPER BODY STRENGTH WE USED THE BENCH PRESS, SQUAT WAS USED FOR LOWER BODY STRENGTH, MEDICINE BALL THROWING: UPPER BODY POWER AND VERTICAL JUMP: LOWER BODY POWER. RESULTS WERE ANALYZED BY THE SOFTWARE SPSS 16 AND INDEPENDENT T-TEST.RESULTS: THE FIRST GROUP HAD SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE BENCH PRESS RECORD AND IT SHOWS THAT UPPER BODY STRENGTH HAS IMPROVED. SQUAT RECORD WAS MET WITH A SLIGHT INCREASE, BUT NOT SIGNIFICANT, AS WELL AS A SLIGHT AND MEANINGLESS (P<0.05) INCREASE WAS SHOWN IN VERTICAL JUMP AND MEDICINE BALL. IN THE SECOND GROUP NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN TESTS OF LOWER AND UPPER BODY AND LOWER BODY STRENGTH WAS OBSERVED, ALSO THE TEST OF UPPER BODY STRENGTH REVEALED REDUCTION BUT NOT SIGNIFICANT.DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: THE EXACT MECHANISM OF THE TAPER PERIOD EFFECT HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED, BUT NEVERTHELESS A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN function OF COMPETITIVE SWIMMERS (1.3%) AFTER TWO WEEKS OF TAPER WAS OBSERVED WHICH WAS CONSISTENT WITH THE FINDINGS OF THIS STUDY [2]. IN THIS STUDY, TWO ATHLETES DID NOT HAVE A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN POST-TEST THAT MAY BE AFFECTED BY OTHER FACTORS SUCH AS SLEEP CYCLE AND NUTRITION THAT NEEDS FURTHER STUDY. WITH PREVIOUS STUDIES, TAPER PERIOD BEFORE COMPETITION IS A SIMPLE TOOL TO IMPROVE ATHLETE CONDITIONS [2]. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT TAPER INDEX IS INTENSITY, VOLUME AND APPROPRIATE DURATION FOR THIS PERIOD. IT HAS BEEN RECOMMENDED THAT WITH MAINTAINING OF EXERCISE, WITH A REDUCTION OF VOLUME (60-90%) AND BETWEEN 4 TO 24 DAYS DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL AND TYPE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PERFORMED REDUCING OF FREQUENCY PER WEEK (20-25%) [3]. IN THIS STUDY WAS AVERAGELY OBSERVED INCREASING OF 3% IN STRENGTH AND 1% IN POWER.
